PSG’s Lionel Messi breaks long-standing record of Brazil icon Pele in last night Champions League masterclass
Paris Saint-Germain forward, Lionel Messi, on Wednesday, broke a long record held by Brazil legend, Pele. Messi now has a combined 1127 goals and assists to surpass Pele’s record of most goal contributions in football history. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner achieved the feat after scoring a brace and providing a brace of assists in PSG’s Champions League 7-2 win over Maccabi Haifa at the Parc Des Princes.
His teammates, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar Jr were also on the scoresheet against the Israeli club. The win helped the French giants book their place in the knockout round of the competition. Tuesday’s feat puts him ahead of Pele, who had a combined 1126 goals and assists during his illustrious career.
With his performance against the Israeli side, Messi became the first player to have more than ten goals and ten assists throughout all competitions in the top five leagues in Europe. But he also reached other significant milestones that evening. Messi also broke Pele’s record for most goals and assists combined, making history in the process.

Messi is now the oldest player to ever record two goals and two assists in a single Champions League match at the age of 35. The records were broken solely as a result of Messi’s outstanding start to the year, which has seen him register 11 goals and 12 assists in 16 games in all competition.
His efforts have been essential in keeping PSG at the top of Ligue 1, and one could anticipate that he will play an even bigger part when the French behemoths attempt to win the Champions League for the first time.
