Luis Enrique, the former Barcelona and Spain coach, was named the new coach of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on a two-year contract, the French champion announced on Wednesday. The 53-year-old, who has been a free agent since being fired as Spain coach in December, takes over for Christophe Galtier. Fans on social media have had different feelings about Enrique’s selection ever since then.
PSG fired Christophe Galtier earlier, the same day they introduced Enrique as his successor. Galtier paid the price for PSG’s dismal 2022-23 season, which saw them limp to an unimpressive Ligue 1 title defense and lose the Champions League in the first round for the fourth time in the past six years.
Christophe Galtier made headlines for all the wrong reasons as well. Galtier and his son were detained last week as part of a probe into suspected prejudice/racism when he was in Nice. The 56-year-old then denied the allegations leveled against him.
Luis Enrique will be expected to turn the Parisians into legitimate contenders for Europe’s most important championship, the Champions League. Luis Enrique previously won the Champions League with Barcelona, which he led to a historic triple in his first season at Camp Nou in 2014-15. During his stint in Catalonia, he won nine titles in all. He has been retained till at least the conclusion of the 2024-25 season.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to Luis Enrique’s appointment to PSG

Fans were disappointed with Luis Enrique heading to PSG. “That’s disappointing,” said one user. Another said “Luis Enrique to PSG? Talk about signing a has-been. Desperate move by a club that spends money but can’t win the Champions League.” Another user elaborated, “Get ready for the cycle again… – Good football against teams like Clermont foot 63 – Cake walk the group stages by beating teams like Macabi Haifa and finish 2nd – Get eliminated in RO16 – Win Ligue 1 -Manager sacked again – Mbappe wants to leave – New Manager new project.”
Other fans praised Enrique but critiqued his choice of signing for PSG. “W manager, L club,” said one fan. Another fan said “No way. I can’t believe he actually signed there… Such a shame. I am certain he will do well if given the freedom, but maaan PSG.”
Only time will tell whether PSG’s decision to hire Enrique was the correct one or not. Till then Enrique has to focus on his job. His main focus will be to win the Champions League for the Parisians.
