This May, FC Barcelona players allegedly voiced their displeasure with the club’s decision to play a friendly game in Australia at the end of the season. Coach Xavi said, according to El Periodico, that it was this match that enabled them to pay their salary.

FC Barcelona agreed to face an all-star side from the Australian championship in a friendly match in Sydney at the end of May for five million euros. The Barcelona lads would have done well without this voyage to the end of the globe a few days after the Spanish championship ended and informed their coach, Xavi.

According to the Spanish newspaper El Periodico, the Blaugrana boss would have responded quickly to refocus his players. The Catalan met his teammates in the dressing room and stated that the proceeds from this friendly encounter will be used to pay the players’ salaries.

He said, “Put five million euros from your pocket on the table, I will bring them to the president and we won’t travel to Australia.”  Xavi even pledged his group, knowing that Barça has one of the largest payrolls in Europe. 

The guys did not finally pull out their credit cards and fly to Sydney. Ousmane Dembélé, Adama Traore, and Ansu Fati scored for the Catalans in a 3-2 victory on May 25.

As the new season is approaching fast, Xavi will be looking to bolster his squad and contest Real Madrid for the La Liga title and even look for a high champions league finish.

Barcelona is sorting out its finances which will help the Catalans to bring potential targets to the club this summer. Big names like Robert Lewandowski, Cesar Azpilicueta, Bernardo Silva, Raphinha, Marcos Alonso, and others are heavily linked with the club. With potential incomings, the new season will be an optimistic one for FC Barcelona and its supporters.
