“Qatar’s real motives weren’t sports washing but extremism preaching” – Twitter reacts as fugitive Islamic preacher Zakir Naik attends the 2022 FIFA World Cup
According to social media posts, Zakir Naik, a controversial Indian Islamic preacher who is accused of money laundering and hate speech in his home country, has landed in Qatar ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup where he would deliver religious preaching during the tournament.
“Preacher Sheikh Zakir Naik is present in Qatar during the World Cup and will give many religious lectures throughout the tournament,” Faisal Alhajri, a presenter at the Qatari state-owned sports channel Alkass, wrote on Twitter on Saturday. Naik moved to Malaysia after fleeing India in 2016.
The Indian government has made Naik a wanted fugitive on suspicion of money laundering and inciting hatred in India, both of which he rejects. India banned Naik from the country in late 2016, charging him of inciting and supporting the organization’s adherents to “promote or attempt to nurture feelings of hostility, hatred, or ill-will between different religious communities and groups.”
