England was one key player down when they faced up Senegal for an easy win of 3-0 in the Round of 16 in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. As explained by coach Gareth Southgate in the pre-match conference, Raheem Sterling was not available to join the squad for the Senegal fixture. The player has flown back to his house in London to deal with some family matters.

The Chelsea winger flew back to his house to check on his family’s well-being after a horrific break-in at his home. According to the reports, the robbers were armed when they forced their way into the house, and Sterling’s partner and Baby were present when the incident occurred. He is the second Englishman to leave the squad due to family matters. A couple of days ago, Ben White also went home due to an undisclosed family emergency.

The English fans were first worried after learning that their talisman Raheem Sterling won’t be there. He scored during the Group stage fixture against Iran, contributing to their emphatic 6-2 win. The Chelsea star helped his team build their place in the knockout stage and undoubtedly would have contributed if he had played against Senegal.

English coach Gareth Southgate was quizzed regarding the player’s update, and why he’s not there, the manager replied, “I don’t know because at the moment, it’s a situation that he needs time with his family to deal with and I don’t want to put him under any pressure with that. Sometimes football isn’t the most important thing and the family should come first.”

The match picked up the pace a little late. The leading man Harry Kane was facing difficulty in scoring as he was getting outpaced by young Senegal players. Harry Maguire at the defensive end also faced trouble controlling the players like Boulaye Dia and Elliman Ndiaye, who were rigorously attacking and pressing for opportunities repeatedly. Putting the English goalkeeper in a situation, Senegal’s forwards locked him one-on-one and missed by a small margin.

The English side was troubled continuously after the start of the first half; it was around the 39th minute when England built on their potential after Jude Bellingham came into action in the penalty area, giving a quick pass to Henderson to sweep it home. Later he was picked up by Harry Kane for the second. Saka scored the final goal to cement their place in the quarterfinals. They will be going head-to-head against the world champions, France.
