Ex-Ghana international Raphael Dwamena dies after suffering cardiac arrest mid-game

Serious injuries on the pitch are no stranger to the professional footballer. There have been instances of players sustaining career-ending and sometimes life-threatening injuries. In a heartbreaking incident, former Ghanaian International and Levante star Raphael Dwamena has passed away, aged 28. The footballer met his sad demise after collapsing on the pitch at Arena Egnatia.

As per reports, the player collapsed on the ground after suffering a heart attack mid-game. The statement issued by the Ghana Football Association reads:

We are saddened to know about the death of our former player. We wish to express our most sincere condolences to the player's family at this moment.

Dwamena was pronounced dead on the pitch shortly after collapsing during the game.

The incident occurred on Saturday as Egnatia were up against Partizani in the Superliga Abissnet Superiore (Albania). The footballing world also offered its condolences and prayers for the departed soul.

The player joined Egnatia in January, for an undisclosed amount. He was employed by BSC Old Boys before his move to Albania. His shocking demise has left the footballing world in sorrow.

The Ghana Football Association President expressed his condolences to the departed star. He said:

He served the country very well and showed class whenever he represented Ghana. 

He offered his thoughts for the player’s family at this unfortunate moment. The player made 8 appearances in total for the Ghana National team.

Despite an untimely death, his legacy on the football pitch lives on. His exploits on the pitch serve as a testimony to his career. The player was in electrifying form for Egnatia, scoring 12 goals in 12 matches, counting both League and Europa Conference League qualifying matches. Dwamena has played for La Liga clubs such as Levante, Real Zaragoza, and FC Zurich.

It is understood that the player was found to have a heart condition back in 2017, but chose to continue playing nonetheless. In the year 2021, the player collapsed on the pitch, following which he had an implantable defibrillator (ICD). Levante and Real Zaragoza have also expressed their condolences on social media.
