After their La Liga match against Girona ended in a 1-1 draw at home, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti may be given a touchline ban for his remarks towards the referee. The decision by referee Mario Melero Lopez to award a late penalty kick against Ancelotti’s team, which allowed their Catalan opponents to snag a point, incensed Ancelotti.

After a VAR check for a soft handball judgment against Los Blancos winger Marco Asensio, Lopez decided to award a penalty. After showing Toni Kroos the first red card of his career in the last seconds, he found himself in the spotlight once more.

The RFEF Integrity Committee will look into Ancelotti and Asensio after the latter sent a scathing remark on social media, according to reports from Mundo Deportivo. Ancelotti might face punishment as the RFEF has taken a strict stance in the past, with Valencia’s captain Jose Luis Gaya receiving a four-game suspension for speaking negatively about a referee last season.

Real Madrid drew 1-1 with Girona at home, giving them their first La Liga loss since the beginning of October. Los Blancos continue to dominate the standings, although Barcelona’s victory at Valencia this past weekend sliced their advantage to one point.

The match in the Spanish capital was decided in the final 20 minutes when Cristhian Stuani’s contentious penalty overturned Vinicius Junior’s game-changing goal. A late spot kick was given to Girona after a VAR review of a harsh handball judgment against Marco Asensio.

In a heated final at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, Rodrygo Goes had a late winner disallowed for a foul on Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga, and Toni Kroos received his first-ever red card. The seasoned Italian coach, Carlo Ancelotti, had no doubts about the influence that referee Mario Melero Lopez had in the outcome and expressed his outrage at the choice in his post-game interview.

“The first situation is clear, it’s not a penalty, as he does not touch the ball with his hand”, as per reports .

“I spoke with Asensio and he told me the ball hit him in the chest.

“If he touches the ball with his hand, there could be a doubt, but he does not do that. They have made it up.”
