“Real Madrid have got no right to be in that [Champions League] final”- Peter Schmeichel
Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel recently stated that Real Madrid is undeserving of their place in the Champions League final, claiming that Carlo Ancelotti’s team has absolutely got “no right” to play against Liverpool on May 28. He further claimed that the Los Blancos have been lucky and have never been the better team in their last six matches in the Champions League.
“The first chance was the first goal in the 90th minute, the second goal was the second chance and the third goal was the third time they hit the target,” Schmeichel told on CBS Sports post-match analysis. “Real Madrid have got no right to be in that [Champions League] final. They were the poorest team by a mile over the two games.”
“Man City was in full control but it’s that one moment we talked about that. We talked about how that stadium in there could be the 12th man. When they started that second half, that chance after just eight seconds it was like they set the whole place on fire and it was just unbelievable.”
Schmeichel even felt a “little bit sorry” for his former club, Manchester City, as he believes that the Citizens dominated the whole match but couldn’t finish it well.
“I feel a little bit sorry for Manchester City, I have to say that because I thought apart from that goal in the 90th minute they played really well, they had everything under control. Rodri in midfield was awesome tonight and I’m not going to criticize anything, but if you lose a player like Kevin De Bruyne and the game turns out in the way it does then you miss him in that last 30 minutes and he was sorely missed.“
“But I mean my God! Real Madrid, where does that come from? I have absolutely no idea. They didn’t play well. Predicting this Champions League has been very, very difficult. I had Bayern Munich winning it and they got knocked out in the quarter-finals.” he added.
Real Madrid will lock horns against Liverpool in the Champions League 2021-22 final
After registering yet another comeback in the Champions League, Real Madrid will travel to Paris, where they will be squaring off against Liverpool, recreating the epic 2017-18 Champions League final. The Los Blancos won that final 3-1, where Gareth Bale scored a brace and Karim Benzema scored a goal as well.
While the Reds will be eyeing revenge on the Los Blancos, the latter will be looking forward to extending their undisputed winning streak in the Champions League.
