Ex-Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil took a humorously mocked La Liga rival Atletico Madrid, following the news of the upcoming trials of the sin-bin system with blue cards. Ozil claimed that the club would be left with only six players very often.

FIFA’s recent decision to introduce the sin-bin system, which is currently in place in rugby and handball, has generated much debate among football fans. The traditional yellow-red card rules are being revamped, with the introduction of blue cards set for a trial period in the upcoming FA Cup season. Players being shown a blue card will be sent out for 10 minutes, for committing a cynical foul or showing dissent.

The German star, who retired from football last year, shared his thoughts on the new blue card rules that might be in place very soon. He suggested that Atletico Madrid could face significant challenges under this system, possibly often playing with only six players. Diego Simeone‘s men are known to play a rough brand of football with players. Ozil had faced the brunt of Atletico’s tactics on the pitch during his stint with Real Madrid.

Moreover, the new rules would affect teams the most, who indulge in rough playing. The new protocol stipulates that fouls to thwart counterattacks will receive a heavier punishment than yellow cards.
