Thibaut Courtois has begun his road to recovery after suffering a rupture in the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee. The GK who was injured before the season began, will be hoping to be fit by April of next year.
Thibaut Courtois suffered the injury during training. A crucial starter of the team, the GK plays at least 30 games a season in the La Liga for Los Blancos, barring his first season. Andriy Lunin is expected to take the starting position for a temporary period. Real Madrid have also acquired the services of Kepa Arrizabalaga on a season-long loan from Chelsea. Without Courtois, Madrid only had one GK in their squad in Lunin. Kepa Arrizabalaga was necessary. With Courtois already starting his recovery, his return could be earlier than expected.
As of now, Real Madrid are doing well without their Belgium GK. With only a goal conceded in 3 games, the Los Blancos have been performing admirably without their No.1. However as we all know, games have been increasing. Teams are playing more and more games depending on how far they go in competitions. Courtois played 49 games for Real Madrid last season. While Lunin and Kepa might be good 2nd choices, will they be able to keep up with the demands of a Madrid team that always aims to win every trophy? Andriy Lunin has only made 19 appearances during his Real Madrid career. Last season was the first time Kepa had 30+ appearances for Chelsea after 3 years of playing second fiddle to Édouard Mendy.
With their main man out, will Madrid be able to sort their GK issues or will they miss their Belgium more than they thought? Madrid up till now has had no problems. With new signing Jude Bellingham shining, fans will be hoping his current form remains consistent.
Thibaut Courtois’ time at Real Madrid
Initially signed from Chelsea at a price of €35M by Real Madrid, the Belgium GK had a rocky start at the Santiago Bernabéu. The GK made multiple errors and was replaced by Alphonse Areola for a brief period as the player looked short on confidence. A stat even emerged that the GK conceded more goals than he had saved in all competitions for Madrid. Fans of his former clubs, Chelsea and Atlético de Madrid were loving his downfall. Commonly referred to as a ‘snake‘ online. Atlético fans had even planned to throw toy rats at the GK for when we visited the Wanda Metropolitano.
Since then Courtois has only gone from strength to strength. The GK who was set to replace 3x Champions League winner Keylor Navas, came through. In 2020, Courtois became the first GK for Real Madrid to keep 18 clean sheets in a season, this had not been done since ‘1987/88 for the side in white. The defining moment in a Real Madrid kit however came in 2022. Liverpool faced Real Madrid in the finals. Vinicius scored the winner but Courtois would take the plaudits as his multiple heroic saves had kept his team in the game, leading them to a Champions League trophy. His 2021/22 UCL campaign ended with him saving 57 shots. 16 more than second place.
Courtois who had a rocky start at the Bernabéu, became their hero winning them their 14th Champions League. Their 5th in 10 years.
