Real Madrid star Toni Kroos has never been one to shy away from his opinions. The German midfielder has made headlines on several occasions for his bold and controversial takes on football. Recently, the Madrid #8 shared his controversial take on the Ballon d’Or. The award is still considered by many to be the most prestigious ‘individual’ award in world football.
Moreover, Kroos has seen club teammates Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric, and Karim Benzema lift the trophy. This has happened on five separate occasions. Speaking in his podcast Einfach mal Luppen, Kroos shared his take. He said that it was ‘prestigious but not important’. Moreover, he thinks that football is a team sport, making individual awards ‘pointless’.
“Individual awards are unnecessary. No single player will even come close to winning something on their own,” said Kroos. Ultimately, it is the team that deserves the accolades and not the individual.
Recently, Kroos also made headlines earlier for commenting ’embarrassing’ under Gabri Veiga‘s move to Saudi. Now, the German has further said that if nominated for the award, he would ‘reject ‘ it. He recently said that he was happy with his form and the club’s current performances.
Manchester City eye Real Madrid midfielder for next summer
Toni Kroos has been an important part of the Real Madrid midfield for many years now. After joining Real in 2014, the player has won numerous titles. However, the 33-year-old may very well be in his final season for Los Blancos. Reports suggest that the veteran midfielder is set for a move away from the Spanish giants this summer.
Moreover, it is Pep Guardiola who is the frontrunner to secure his services. Manchester City are reportedly interested in acquiring Kroos in the summer. In spite of his decision to end his career with Real, City may persuade the player away from Spain. The Cityzens are plotting a €15 million-a-year contract. Additionally, Kroos is in the final year of his contract at Madrid.
The 33-year-old has done spectacularly well to force himself into the starting line-up. His recent form has earned him starts over Aurelien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga. Kroos has a goal and 2 assists this season. The German is entering his tenth season at the club and has won every trophy possible with the side. His contract ends on June 30, 2024.
