Mesut Ozil, the ex-German footballer, picked his best XI teammates, mainly favoring those from Real Madrid, Arsenal, and the German national team. Playing for Real Madrid, he gained recognition as a top assist provider with the Spanish giants.

An integral part of Germany’s 2014 World Cup win, Ozil, considered one of the best attacking midfielders of his time, retired at 34 due to discrimination from the German Football Association. But, now, he built his strongest lineup with the ‘best XI teammates’ that he has played with throughout his career and in different teams.

Ozil picked 5 former Real Madrid teammates- Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Marcelo, Sergio Ramos, and Xabi Alonso. It was expected considering he was part of one of the golden Los Blancos era. Here is the full XI that Ozil picked:

  • LB- Marcelo
  • CM- Xabi Alonso
  • CM– Santi Cazorla

Mesut Ozil, since his retirement has stayed off the limelight. Ozil though, missed out the likes of Kaka and Thomas Muller, two players with whom he spent a considerable amount of time. But, at the same time, it is understandable to miss out on a few big names as well considering he had to cherry-pick XI out of such a premium list.

Mesut Ozil began his career at German clubs Schalke and Werder Bremen before moving to Real Madrid in Spain. Later, he joined Arsenal, playing around 250 matches and scoring 44 goals. Known for his playmaking and creativity, Ozil’s time at Arsenal ended due to a fallout with the management over his comments supporting Uyghur Muslims in China.

Following the fallout, Ozil moved to Fenerbahce in Turkey, then Istanbul Basakshehir, and eventually retired at 34. He had previously retired from the German national team, citing racism and disrespect over his Turkish ancestry, and faced criticism in Germany for endorsing Turkish President Erdogan. Ozil’s remarkable career thus abruptly concluded.
