Despite all the elaborate campaigns and stringent rules in place to tackle racism, the dreadful reality is that racial abuse is still very much in existence in the sport. Time and again, the footballing community witnesses one player or the other being subject to abuse, be it from fans, opposition players or sometimes even the very system that seeks to abolish the practice.

Real Madrid and Brazil star Vinicius Jr. has been on the receiving end of racist abuse on several occasions. The Madrid No.7 was reduced to tears on Monday as he was quizzed about the repeated and systemic racist abuse he has been subject to in Spain.

On several occasions, the winger has regrettably been made to face racist chants and gestures, mostly from opposition fans. A lot of emotions flowed during his presser.

Here is what he had to say:

I feel more and more sad and have less will to play. I've asked help from UEFA, FIFA, CONMEBOL. Spain isn't a racist country, but there are many in the stadiums. I've never thought about leaving La Liga because that's giving the racists what they want.

The Champions League winner stated that he doesn’t intend to make it any easier for racists and that he’ll keep winning titles with Real Madrid for seasons to come. He pointed out certain people who go to matches to hurt players and let out all their rage, adding that such ‘fans’ have no place in the sport.

He revealed that what’s most sad to him is that at the age of 23, he is forced to make people understand that certain things should not be said and done and that they are racially motivated. Spain host Brazil at the Santiago Bernabeu, Vinicius’ home turf with Madrid at 4:30 pm EST. The stadium has a strict no-racism policy called ‘One Skin’.
