Luis Rubiales has been under fire following his unacceptable kiss on Jenni Hermoso during the Award Ceremony of the Women’s World Cup back in August. His actions have received severe backlash on social media as well as in the football community. Several players, coaches, and staff came out in support of Hermoso while also condemning Rubiales’ actions.
Shortly after Alvaro Morata, César Azpilicueta, Rodri, and Marco Asensio held a press conference, stating their position on the issue, Real Madrid and Spain defender Dani Carvajal came forward in support of the player. After the 4 players announced that they were representing the entire squad, Carvajal made his own statement to the Press. The Spaniard acknowledged his 4 compatriots’ statement and said Rubiales’ actions were out of line.
The player also pointed out that the scandal has taken precedence over the World Cup victory, saying it is unfortunate. He also said that his actions were not typical of the moment or of a President. When asked about the reason why the Men’s team did not include the name Hermoso in their Press Statement, he said that they were only listing out what they ‘reject’ and not the other way around.
After an official complaint was filed by Jenni Hermoso, the 42-year-old will now face an official investigation and trial if convicted. FIFA is planning to ban the Spaniard for a 15-year period.
Montse Tome is the new Head Coach
In the wake of Rubiales’ suspension and impending investigation, Jorge Vilda, former Women’s National Team Head Coach was removed from his position. Further, reports suggest that there have been internal doubts as to the appointment of the new coach, Montse Tome. Tome had been serving under Vilda as coaching staff for the past 5 years. However, upon Vilda’s suspension, she became the first woman in the team’s history to be the head coach.
Vero Boquete, former Spain international said that Tome did not fit into the profile of someone fit enough to coach a World Cup-winning side. She said that an opportunity for change and to do the right thing was ‘missed’. She called for a merit-based appointment, which Tome failed to impress, according to her.
Even though Tome is not Jorge Vilda. But having served 5 years under him could make a huge difference. Whether the appointment will make any difference is unclear as of now. Reports also suggest that the players are not yet convinced of the new head coach.
