Vinicius Jr. showed his compassionate side to the world on Sunday. The Real Madrid winger penned down a message of support to Benjamin Mendy. The former Manchester City left-back was recently acquitted after he was falsely charged with rape. However, owing to the trial, Mendy could not work as a professional footballer for close to two years.

Vinicius offered his apologies to Mendy. He tweeted, “I’m sorry for everything you’ve been through, Benjamin Mendy.  You lost two years of your career, but that’s the least of this whole situation… What about the psychological damage? Surely your life will never be the same. The culture of destroying reputations has made yet another victim.”

Vinicius condemned fake news and highlighted that athletes are often under the scrutiny of the media and sometimes are falsely criticized. “Until when will we be accused and condemned without having the right to basic defense? Fake news are created and spread without checking any facts (which is something I personally felt a lot on this holidays) and then the situation only gets worse.” Said Vinicius.

Vinicius called out news created for mere views and criticized the clickbait culture. He ended his message with a poignant message. “Being responsible would be the minimum for any professional, but nowadays serious work has become an exception. There’s no limits to get more clicks and engagement. My question is what will be done to repair the damage?”

Benjamin Mendy, a former defender for Manchester City, was found not guilty and acquitted of all assault-related allegations. Nearly three years have passed since a 24-year-old woman initially accused him, leading to the decision. In October 2020, he started his quest to defend his reputation after a lady accused him of forcing closeness at his Cheshire house.

Mendy reportedly sobbed as his judgment was pronounced, according to sources. The ruling put an end to a legal dispute that had started in 2020. He lost a significant portion of his life and football career as a result of the trial.

When the media questioned him outside Chester Crown Court, he merely responded with one word.  He said, “Alhamdulillah,” which is Arabic for “praise be to God.”  He brushed off more inquiries while trying to hold back tears.
