Robert De Zerbi has sent a message to departing player Moises Caceido. He also doubled down with a stern warning to other clubs who want to buy players from Brighton. He said, “You can buy our players, but not our souls.” De Zerbi has done a spectacular job at Brighton since taking over Graham Potter last year.
Chelsea had sacked Thomas Tuchel mid-season and needed a guy to replace him. Potter back then was considered one of the most talented managers in English football. He had done a great job by making Brighton employ a more attractive playing style. The Blues paid the release clause and he was on his way. The English club whose recruitment has arguably been the best in the country, sought to replace him as quickly as possible.
They found their candidate in Italian Roberto De Zerbi, who left Shakhtar for the Premier League. Everyone agreed that it would be very difficult to take over from Potter. He had made Brighton a mid-table side from a Championship team. But, De Zerbi was a talented man and it showed in the last season. He led Brighton to a sixth-place finish, making them qualify for the Europa League. This would be the team’s first appearance in the competition. He has also been a stern disciplinarian.
He sold Leandro Trossard who was one of their best players to Arsenal in January. This was because of his inability to comply with the manager’s instructions. Now, in a press conference ahead of the first game of the new season when De Zerbi was asked about the whole Moises Caceido situation he said, “We’ve already forgotten about him.” This meant that the team would go ahead without him and still reach new heights with the manager. This showed the Italian’s ruthlessness.
The Moises Caceido saga
The saga of Moises Caceido has been one of the most entertaining ones in football. He was supposed to join Manchester United in 2020. But that move fell through and he moved to Brighton. He has made a name for himself there.
This has led him to be sought after by many clubs. In January, he was heavily linked to Arsenal. He wrote an open letter to the club that he wanted to leave. But the club did not entertain him and made him stay till the summer. Arsenal signed Jorginho instead. Caceido then agreed to personal terms with Chelsea for a summer move.
But Brighton rejected their £100m offer. Instead, they accepted Liverpool‘s £110m offer. They booked medicals and Jurgen Klopp even confirmed his move. However, his intention was only to move to Chelsea. He rejected The Reds’ terms and messaged Chelsea players that he will be joining soon. Now, it seems that he finally might get his move as Chelsea and Brighton are set to agree a £115m offer.
