Rodrygo becomes the second player to score multiple goals in a Copa del Rey final after Lionel Messi
Rodrygo reached an impressive milestone as Real Madrid cruised to Copa del Rey’s success. He bagged a brace as Los Merengues edged Osasuna in the final, held at the Estadio de La Cartuja, Seville which matched a feat previously chalked by Lionel Messi in the process. For Osasuna, it was a second defeat in a Copa final, after they lost 2-1 to Espanyol back in 2005.
Rodrygo continues to etch his name in the annals of Real Madrid and Spanish football history with his latest goal-scoring heroics in the final of the Copa del Rey. The Brazilian forward scored on either side of half-time to help Los Blancos win their first Spanish Cup title since 2014 at the expense of Osasuna on Saturday evening. For Ancelotti, it is the 10th trophy for Madrid across his two spells.
The Brazilian forward opened the scoring inside two minutes in Seville after excellent work from Vinicius Junior, who cut the ball back from the byline to give his compatriot a straightforward finish. Lucas Torro equalized for Osasuna just short of the hour mark with a lovely strike from long range, but Rodrygo netted his second after 67 minutes to restore the lead for Carlo Ancelotti’s side from close range when he pounced on a Fede Valverde shot.
Real Madrid will hold on to record their 20th Copa del Rey crown, their first in nine years. Rodrygo also became the first player since Lionel Messi to score multiple goals in the Copa del Rey final with his brace against Osasuna. Madrid is up against Manchester City in the first leg of the teams’ semi-final on Tuesday night.
