Romelu Lukaku is no stranger to the ups and downs of football. The Belgian striker has had a strained relationship with fans, be it at Inter Milan or Roma. The 6’3″ striker is a force to reckon with and is known for his strength, finishing, and ability to overpower defenders in play. His transfer to Roma from Inter Milan caused mass outrage among Inter fans, who whistled for the player’s return to the San Siro.
After a disastrous stint at Chelsea, the player made the move to AS Roma this summer. After a move back to Italy, Lukaku hit a poor run of form after his spectacular start to the season. The player was struggling with goals and his experience with Inter fans did not help either. However, his fortune took a turn for the better, when Lukaku scored the winner against Lecce in a late comeback win.
It is worth noting that the Belgian missed a penalty in the 4th minute, before his goal in the 93rd. Roma were trailing 1-0 going into injury time. However, a bullet header by Sardar Azmoun pulled Roma level.
Lukaku’s moment of redemption came when he dropped his defender on the turn, and with a lofted shot, found the top corner from close range. The goal came as a relief for both fans and players. Lukaku was seen in tears after the final whistle.

Fans React to Romelu Lukaku’s last-minute winner
An exhilarating clash between Roma and Lecce ended in favor of the former thanks to two late goals. Sardar Azmoun and Romelu Lukaku scored two crucial goals which ensured that the home side secured all three points. On a night in which Lukaku was reduced to tears, Roma boss Jose Mourinho opened up about his players and the game plan.
Fans reacted to the player’s return to his best, heaping praise on the Belgian.
Speaking of Lukaku, Mourinho said:
I know him better than anyone else. He is a very very emotionally sensitive man. When he misses a penalty, it hurts his heart for the rest of the 90 minutes. It will help Romelu sleep better and wake up with a smile on his face.
The last-minute winner could have been scored by someone more deserving, added Mourinho.
