FC Barcelona had a night to forget against Villarreal in La Liga on Saturday. The defending champions were thoroughly outplayed by 14th-place Villarreal CF, who emphatically overcame Xavi and co. by an unbelievable scoreline of 3-5. Even though Ronald Araujo forced the club’s ‘go-ahead’ goal, the player was spotted having an angry outburst, which many believe cost his team a goal.

Ronald Araujo, despite a goal and multiple defensive clearances, was ‘crucified’ by Barcelona fans for his errors against Villarreal. The Uruguayan center-back played a crucial role in his team’s third and final goal of the game. However, the #4 also missed a golden chance in front of goal, while also costing his team the game after losing possession in his box, leading to Alexander Sorloth‘s 90+8’ winner.

The Uruguayan has been in the news for alleged transfer links to Thomas Tuchel‘s Bayern Munich. However, Barcelona value him highly and are unwilling to let go of their star defender.

The player, however, has endured a tough run of games recently. After being second best to Vinicius Jr. in the final of the Spanish Super Cup, his errors against Villarreal were highlighted on social media, much to the delight of opposition fans.

Fans troll Ronald Araujo for his angry outburst against Villarreal

Barcelona star defender Ronald Araujo has been ripped into by fans on social media following the game against Villarreal. Many laughed at how the player seemed to forget about his duty as a defender and threw the bottles to his frustration. Others opined that had Araujo tracked back, Villarreal’s fifth goal could have been avoided. It is clear from the replay that Jose Luis Morales had ample time to set up his shot in front of the goal.

Another commented that this proves the end of the debate run by Barcelona and Real Madrid fans. They were pointing to Antonio Rudiger and how he would have ‘never’ done the same amidst a potential counter-attack by the opponents. Other comments laughed at how Thomas Tuchel was willing to spend over €80 million on him.

As it stands, Barcelona are now ten points away from the top in La Liga. Rivals Real Madrid look poised to lift the title over Barcelona, even though Girona are breathing down their neck, just two points behind. Barcelona boss Xavi recently announced his decision to leave the club at the end of his contract as well. The club is up against Osasuna and Alavés for their upcoming games.
