In the recent international break, Uruguay beat Bolivia 3-0 and continued being 2nd in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers. Two goals by Darwin Nunez and an own goal by Gabriel Villamil ensured Uruguay’s victory. Although Nunez scored the opener, it would not have been possible without a moment of brilliance by Ronald Araujo

Receiving the ball, Bolivian winger Roberto Fernandez tried dribbling past the Barcelona center-back, but Araujo with ease got the ball off the Bolivian. He then dribbled to the right flank and played a beautiful ball to Facundo Pellistri. Pellistri, on receiving the ball, dribbled towards the edge of the box and played it to Darwin Nunez, who scored with his first touch.

Uruguay got their second goal thanks to a comedy of errors. Nicholas de la Cruz, who was on corner duty, delivered the ball inside the box. Bolivian keeper, Guillermo Viscarra, charged towards the ball and attempted to punch it away.

Unfortunately, it hit teammate Gabriel Villmamil and the ball rolled into the goal. Darwin Nunez scored Uruguay’s third goal after he headed an assist by de la Cruz.

Marcelo Bielsa’s brilliant start with Uruguay

Regarded as one of the most influential managers of all time, fans were interested to know what Marcelo Bielsa would do once he was sacked by Leeds United in February 2022. After being without any job for a year, he was hired by the Uruguayan National Team in March 2023. He managed his first match against Japan, which they drew 1-1, but beat South Korea in their next fixture.

In the 2023/24 season, Bielsa has led the Uruguayan team to 2 wins in friendlies and 4 wins in the World Cup qualifiers, losing only one. Under his regime, they beat Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, and Chile, but lost to Ecuador and drew to Colombia. The Uruguay National Team currently are 2nd, with the top 6 getting direct qualification to the 2026 World Cup.
