Lionel Messi was crowned as FIFA The Best Men’s Player for a record third time on Monday. The Argentine edged Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe to the award in a voting procedure that went down straight to the wire. However, eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo did not make it to the 3-man shortlist. His absence was noted by several fans and followers, with many stating that Ronaldo’s exploits in the Saudi Pro League ‘just doesn’t cut it’ anymore.

Cristiano Ronaldo took to Instagram, as the Portuguese star posted a picture of himself in training. Fans, however, felt surprised as to the timing of his post, stating how the post came up just an hour after Lionel Messi’s crowning as The Best.

It is, however, worthy to be noted that the 38-year-old returned to training with Al-Nassr on Monday. The Saudi Pro League was paused for an extended period in light of the ongoing Asian Cup.

Further, it features Cristiano looking at the camera with a wry smile. The Portuguese is now back in action after enjoying the holidays with his partner Georgina Rodriguez and family.

During this time, the player also posted snippets of his grueling workout sessions and fitness routine. Al-Nassr will return to action on the 24th of January against Shanghai Shenhua.

Fans laugh at Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘poorly timed’ Instagram post

5-time Champions League winner Cristiano Ronaldo currently piles his trade in the Saudi Pro League. The veteran forward failed to make it to the FIFA The Best shortlist, as eternal rival Lionel Messi lifted it for a record third time. Following the ceremony and Ronaldo’s Instagram post, fans have drawn their conclusions on social media. Many believe that the Portuguese posted the image as a reply to Lionel Messi’s victory in Paris.

A fan commented that Ronaldo was probably in tears and crying his eyes out following Messi’s victory. Another chipped in to say that Ronaldo is desperately trying to keep a rivalry alive, which was done and dusted ages ago. Some mocked Ronaldo’s timing, stating how this proves that the #7 is ‘insecure’ about his Argentine rival’s success.

However, fans of the superstar defended him in the comments. Many explained that it was his first day back in Al-Nassr training after the break. Many others said that this was a narrative pushed by ‘obsessed’ Lionel Messi fans. As of now, Ronaldo is the Saudi Pro League top scorer with 20 goals, while Lionel Messi is yet to start his season with MLS club Inter Miami as he can be seen prepping.
