Manchester City had a proposal to renovate their stadium, which has now been approved. It would expand the capacity of the Etihad Stadium to over 60,000 seats, and would also come along with the additions of a hotel and a museum. The expansion plans will see approximately 7,000 new seats being added to the stadium. Which would be achieved by creating a larger-single upper tier in the north stand. This design will differ from the expansion of the south stand, which was completed in 2015.

As the inclusion of the Etihad Stadium as one of the venues for potential Euro 2028 matches in the joint bid by the UK and Ireland was also taken into consideration. The bid quoted a planned new capacity of 61,000 for the stadium.

Apart from the increased seating capacity, the expansion project includes the development of a new covered fan zone, integrated into the stadium behind the north stand. Additionally, a new club shop, museum, and a 400-bed hotel are also part of the plans. Meanwhile, the presence of a nearby Co-op Live Arena, with a capacity of 23,500, which is currently under construction, could potentially attract business to the new hotel.

Manchester City expects the entire expansion project, along with the various amenities, to take around three years to complete. The investment for this significant development plan in east Manchester is estimated to be around £300 million. The renovation will start in November and is expected to finish by 2025.

On Thursday, midfielder David Silva retired from professional Football. The Spaniard was part of the City’s first batch of players who came after the ownership of Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Group. He was hugely successful and won four Premier League titles during his time at the club. He left the club after 10 years to join Real Sociedad in 2020.

Silva’s decision to hang his boots was majorly down to a recent knee injury he sustained in the pre-season. On social media, he wrote that it was a sad day for him. He thanked his fellow players for their support and ended the message saying he’ll miss everyone.

The player is considered a legend at Manchester City and has a statue of himself outside the stadium. He retired from international Football in 2018. He is also a World Cup winner, winning the tournament in 2010.
