Despite dominating the whole game, Liverpool ended their day with disappointment in front of the home crowd at Anfield against Manchester United. Virgil Van Dijk and his team missed a golden opportunity to remain top of the Premier League point table against a United team that has been underdelivering in the last few matches.
In a post-match interview, Liverpool star defender Virgil Van Dijk made his feelings clear about the Red Devils’ performance. He claimed that Eric ten Hagg’s side showed no sign of playing for the win saying;
There was only one team playing to win the game.
This was a clear jibe at the lack of attacking output from Manchester United even though the final score remained 0-0. Van Dijk’s comments attracted fiery reactions from Manchester United legend and pundit Roy Keane. He labeled Van Dijk as ‘arrogant‘ and ‘disrespectful‘ for his comments.
Van Dijk is arrogant. He needs to remember Liverpool have only won one title in 30 years!
Keane also went on to further remind the defender that his club had just won, one League title in the last 30 years. This certainly suggests that Van Dijk’s arrogance may have backfired as Keane is known for being an individual to not hold back his emotions.
From the bus attack to the fiery battle of words, the fixture ended up providing entertainment of all sorts, apart from the football played on the pitch. Despite Liverpool’s dominance in possession they failed to convert any chances, also succumbing to an open goal miss by Darwin Nunez.
When Roy Keane made a secret visit to the United training ground and was left frustrated
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s 2019 decision to have Roy Keane address the squad at Carrington backfired, exposing internal team issues. Hoping to draw from Keane’s experience and leadership, Solskjaer aimed to inspire a struggling United side vying for a Champions League spot.
However, Keane, known for his strong opinions, was reportedly left unimpressed by the lack of interest displayed by an unnamed player during the private session. The incident highlighted the challenges and disunity within the squad at the time, with the player in question appearing disinterested and giving the impression that he would rather be elsewhere.
Keane’s visit revealed internal problems at Old Trafford, echoed by players like Fred, citing a lack of unity and hinting at vanity issues. Under Erik ten Hag’s management, Manchester United has seen significant changes, parting ways with key players Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Pogba, and Edinson Cavani, signaling a shift in team culture.
