India is set to face Nepal in the SAFF Championship on Saturday, June 24, 2023. This will be the 24th encounter of both teams in this competition since the 1985 SAF Games.

After a 4-0 thrashing of Pakistan, India will have a fantastic opportunity to advance to the SAFF Championship semi-finals during their meet with Nepal. On the other hand, Nepal would look forward to getting a positive result and marching to the semi-finals. But their track record against the Blues says otherwise.

India seems to have the upper hand as it is indicated in the 16-2 overall head-to-head record in 23 matches played between both teams. The two teams last met during the 2021 SAFF Championship. Back then India defeated Nepal 3-0.

India started their SAFF Championship journey this season by defeating Lebanon 2-0 in the Intercontinental Cup final in Odisha. The Blue Tigers maintained that confidence into their first encounter at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium. They hammered Pakistan 4-0, with skipper Sunil Chhetri scoring a hat-trick. India will be without head coach Igor Stimac, who was issued a red card after India’s 4-0 triumph against Pakistan in the tense first encounter. In the dugout, assistant coach Mahesh Gawli will take over.

On the other hand, Nepal lost 1-3 to Kuwait in their first encounter, and a win over India, however difficult, is required for them to remain in the SAFF competition. However, India must caution against complacency because Nepal has the ability to surprise. Nepal’s Rohit Chand, a 31-year-old midfielder who plays in the Indonesian League, and attacker Anjan Bista might be surprise packages. Furthermore, Nepal coach Vincenzo Alberto Annese is reportedly well-versed in Indian football. He has previously managed I-League champions Gokulam Kerala FC.

Predicted line-up

India will be missing star defender Sandesh Jhingan. He signed with the Croatian club HNK Sibenik. The player is currently recovering from a leg injury and will be out of the match. And the team would also miss their head coach in the sideline as he has been banned for a match as he saw a red card in the previous game against Pakistan.

Nepal only made one alteration to the starting eleven that faced the Philippines. They might not line up in a similar fashion in the upcoming match. On the flanks, Manish Dangi seemed to be the coach’s preferred choice over Ayush Ghalan in the Philippines match. And the 21-year-old winger came dangerously close to scoring.

Predicted Line-up of India

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, Akash Mishra, Rahul Bhekke, Chingslesana Singh, Subhashish Bose, Suresh Wangjam, Glan Martin, Brandon Fernandes, Manvir Singh, Liston Colaco, and Sunil Chhetri.

Predicted Line up of Nepal

Kiran Chemjong, Sanish Shresta, Ananta Tamang, Rohit Chand, Bimal Pandey, Arik Bista, Pujan Uperkoti, Laken Limbu; Anjan Bista, Manish Dangi, Nawayug Shresta.
