As per recent developments, the FIFA World Cup is set to return to the Asian continent. Saudi Arabia has submitted a formal bid to host to the World Cup in 2034. It is looking increasingly likely that the country will prevail in the bidding. To quote the officials, “They submitted a letter of intent and signed a declaration to FIFA to bid.” This edition of voting is only open for members of the Asian and Oceania continents.
The 2026 World Cup is set to be co-hosted by Canada and the USA. The 2030 decision will feature a 6-nation, three-continent co-hosting set-up. The 2034 edition, however, will only feature a singular nation. November 30th is the official deadline to make a signed bid with the support of National Governments. Australia is the only other Nation to have expressed any interest in hosting the 2034 edition.
In spite of hosting the Women’s World Cup earlier this year, Australia may miss out on the 2034 edition. This is because FIFA demands 7 existing stadiums and 14 football-quality pitches. They also require a minimum capacity of 40,000. Saudi Arabia however, does meet the above-mentioned requirements. Saudi Arabia said, “We aim to unlock new football opportunities at all levels.”
