On the night of 4th January, Sevilla lost at home to Athletic Bilbao. Strokes by Mikel Vesga and Aitor Paredes meant the Basque club got 3 points in the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium. They dropped from 15th to 16th, just one point away from the relegation zone.
Former Real Madrid captain and Sevilla defender, Sergio Ramos, was giving the post-match interview. In the middle of his interview, Ramos noticed a fan heckling in the stand and started shouting at him, instructing him to show some respect to the badge and be quiet while someone is talking.
Have a little respect, people are talking here! Have a little respect for the people and the badge.Sergio Ramos yelled in Spanish to the fan in the stands
Sevilla’s form this season has been concerning. A team that usually used to finish in the top 4 and was a serious contender for the UEFA Europa League is in the relegation zone. They have sacked 4 managers in 2023 due to their poor domestic form. They won’t be able to defend their Europa League due to them finishing at the bottom of their Champions League group, which meant they couldn’t play in any European competitions.
Sergio Ramos’s time at Sevilla
Sergio Ramos joined Sevilla’s academy at the age of 10 years and was promoted to the senior team in 2003. In his first two seasons he mostly played as a center-back, but at times played as a right-back.
In 2005 he joined Real Madrid for €27 million, a then record signing for a Spanish defender. He was instrumental in their successes, winning 5 La Ligas, 4 Champions Leagues, and 2 Copa del Rey. Ramos was regarded as one of the best defenders of his era, captaining the Real Madrid side for 6 years. He left for Paris Saint Germain, where he won the league twice.
After his contract ran out in 2023, he returned to his boyhood club. So far he has started 10 games out of 16. He missed out on 2 games, one due to a red card and one due to a thigh injury. He and Sevilla have struggled, with the team conceding 27 goals in 19 games. He’s only managed 3 clean sheets across all competitions as well.
Sevilla now play Racing de Ferrol, a club in La Liga 2, on 7th January. They will play in the Estadio A Malta, Racing’s home stadium, in the Copa del Rey’s round of 32. Their next La Liga opponents will be visitors Alaves, who are 1 point ahead of Sevilla.
