Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer, who collapsed on the pitch last year, in a recent interview showcased the defibrillator device fitted inside his body. Lockyer had suffered a cardiac arrest during Luton’s match against Bournemouth, on 16th December 2023.
The Luton Town captain, who has been out of football for some time now after suffering a cardiac arrest last year, spoke to a Sky Sports reporter. He was stretchered off the pitch after he collapsed in the 60th minute of a Premier League match. Concerns arose about the player’s well-being due to a previous incident when he collapsed during a Championship match against Coventry last season. The EPL match was later abandoned.
The Welsh star displayed the implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), which has been fitted into his chest. These devices are specially designed to restart the heart through shocks instantly, in case of a future occurrence. Terming it as a ‘battle wound’, Lockyer showed the device under his arm, with wires running through his chest into his heart. Additionally, he mentioned that the device includes a battery that requires replacement every ten years.
The Luton captain aims to make a comeback to the club and participate in their inaugural Premier League season. He will join the likes of Manchester United star Christian Eriksen, to play with a defibrillator, if he makes a comeback.
