WATCH: “The king is back”- Social media hails Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford as they thrash Spurs in first half of PL clash
Tottenham vulnerable to third successive defeat.
Manchester United lead 2-0 against Tottenham Hotspur in the first half courtesy of Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford. Jadon Sancho opened the scoring with a beautiful finish into the bottom right corner. Spurs were exposed on the backline once again as Marcus Rashford won the race to a wonderful diagonal from Bruno Fernandes and blasted it past Fraser Foster just before the half came to a close.
The opening goal reflected the way the Red Devils played bossing the match. That was a fairly familiar goal for Spurs to concede, it was much like how Joelinton created Newcastle’s opener on the weekend. A brief chant of ‘Come on you Spurs’ out of the home end but it’s all coming from the away fans as United settle back into possession.
It was United’s first shot on target to add misery to the Lilywhites as they look highly vulnerable to not qualifying for European football. Going behind so early on, they need to find a way back into this game. It plays into the visitor’s hands now who could just pick them off on the break. Not the best of starts for the new interim manager Ryan Mason after his return to the club.
Rashford piled on the misery later in the half after Casemiro dispossessed his fellow countryman Richarlison and the ball ricocheted to Fernandes. The Portuguese looked up and spotted the dynamic Englishman making a run behind the defence. Fernandes found him with a peach of a ball and Rashford found the back of the net. This was Rashford’s 15th scalp of the season.
Fans react after Jadon Sancho scores the opener for Man United
United have looked very commanding on the ball and Spurs are playing like the away side so far. Man United fans are singing “We’ll see you in June, Harry Kane“ as a result of strong rumors linking him to an exit away from the club after not winning any silverware in his wonderful career. Ryan Mason will hope to overturn the result from the start of the second half.
United, on the other hand, remain in contention to secure a Champions League spot. Three straight league wins leave them fourth in the table and boss Erik ten Hag will be hopeful they can overcome the setback of being knocked out of the Europa League. Their current lead sees them maintaining the fourth spot in contention for Champions League football.
