“Southgate and Fernando Santos are both dumb coaches”- Fans lash out at Portugal after team drops Renato Sanches at 2022 FIFA World Cup
Renato Sanches
Renato Sanches won’t be representing Portugal at the FIFA World Cup this summer because he wasn’t selected for the 35-man preliminary group, but Cristiano Ronaldo will. Sanches excelled in that contest and was named the best young player at Euro 2016.
But since moving to Bayern Munich after the competition, his popularity has plummeted. The young Portuguese sensation was on loan at Swansea City for the 2017–18 season. For the Welsh team in a season that saw them relegated, he has only made nine Premier League starts.
Fernando Santos’ choice may have been influenced by the constant injury problems that have dogged Sanches throughout his career and have returned since his move to Paris. Only four times this season Sanches played the entire match and he hasn’t ever played the full 90 minutes in 2022–23.
