The final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup kicked off in Sydney, and since the final’s first half, Spain has looked like the dominant team. They have dominated possession and created more chances than the three lionesses. Spain’s Olga Carmona opened the scoring for her team in the 29th minute with a powerful striker past Mary Erps, the English keeper. This was the first final, ending with a 1-0 result, although the scoreline could have differed fairly.

Olga Carmona has been in smashing form as this comes as her consecutive striker for Spain. In the second half, England star Lauren James replaced Alessia Russo, and the fans had high expectations of her. Spain also made a big gamble by experimenting with 19-year-old Salma Paralluelo starting over their two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas. As recovering from an ACL injury, she started the game on the bench.

During the game, Jennifer Hermoso had the chance to increase Spain’s scoreboard. They were awarded a penalty in the 69th minute, but it was saved by Erps, who made a cocky gesture with her tongue out in confidence following the save. England looked to gain momentum in the game with their intensity, but the Spanish women firmly held onto their grounds.

However, the English women created plenty of chances in the second half. Unfortunately, none amounted to anything, with Hemp coming the closest in the 55th minute through a gorgeous curling cross from Chloe Kelly. It was a bitter defeat for the Euro Winners, who looked to win their second trophy in consecutive years. England was the favorite over Spain, but the Spanish victory reminded fans of the sheer grit from the 2012 World Cup, causing the nation to celebrate in ecstasy.
