The ‘incident’ where former RFEF President and UEFA Vice President Luis Rubiales kissed Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the 2023 World Cup award ceremony, has left the world of football in quite a stir. But after all of the heat for almost a month, now, Rubiales has announced his resignation from both positions.
Calls for #RubialesOut and criticism on Twitter forced FIFA to suspend the 46-year-old, following which he announced his resignation. He has also been slammed with a restraining order by the Spain High Court- where he is not allowed within 200 meters of Jenni Hermoso. In a recent statement made by the Spain Women’s National Team, it said, “The changes that have taken place are not enough for the players to feel that they are in a safe place.”
Further, the players have come out yet again and have said that they will not appear for the upcoming games. They believe that the resignation of Head Coach Jorge Vilda and President Luis Rubiales is not enough for them to feel ‘respected’, or to feel that they are ‘supported’. So, it does not make them feel to give their maximum performance in such a state of insecurity.
The Spain Women’s national team confirm via a statement that they will not return to play for their country for their upcoming matches:

Spain Women’s National Football Team calls off the strike over wage structure
La Furia Roja Femini has called off the strike after hitting a new deal with the Spanish FA regarding an increase in their minimum wages. According to reports, the first set of matches scheduled were boycotted after there was no resolution regarding the same. However, the players have decided to call off the strike after the minimum wage was increased from $17,000 to $22,500. It has been a matter of concern for quite a long.
While women were being paid a minimum of $17,100, men were receiving a minimum salary of almost $195,000. Now, the minimum salary sits at $22,500 which can also go up to $25,200 depending on available revenue. An interesting statistic shows that, out of 334 Women, 80 made less than $21,400, in spite of the average salary being $42,900. The timing of the strike also aligned with that of the players’ protest to force the resignation of Luis Rubiales following the ‘kissgate’ scandal.
