Luis Rubiales has been imposed with a restraining order by The Spanish High Court. The Spanish Football President is not allowed within 200 meters of women’s football player Jenni Hermoso.
When Spain lifted the World Cup, Luis Rubiales kissed Jenni Hermoso during the medal ceremony. An action that caused reputational damage to Spanish Football. Heromoso came out in a statement where she made it clear that the kiss in question was non-consensual. Luis Rubiales, in a press conference, doubled down stating that the kiss was indeed consensual and that he would not resign as President and called the criticism of the kiss, ‘false feminism’. The Spanish FA backed Luis Rubiales and went as far as lodging a Legal complaint against the player.
Since then a plethora of players have come forward in support of the player. The England’s Women’s Team released a statement on the issue. Former players such as Iker Casillas stated that he was embarrassed by Rubiales’ press conference. Current men’s players also criticized his actions, such as Alvaro Morata and David De Gea. There was widespread support for Jenni and widespread contempt for Luis Rubiales. FIFA, would later, personally intervene declaring that Rubiales is forbidden from taking part in any football-related activities for an initial period of 90 days.

Recently, now, Luis Rubiales has stated his desire to resign after the whole debacle in an interview with Piers Morgan. But he may be finally getting his so-called ‘desire’ fulfilled after the imposition of the restraining order. The story may finally be coming to an end.
How does the resignation of Luis Rubiales mark a change in the women’s game?
Luis Rubiales’s departure was confirmed after the sacking of Jorge Vilda. The former National Team manager who led the women’s team to the World Cup was not liked by the players. After news broke out in September 2022 of how Vilda used to run the National Team, over 15 players publicly came out and resigned. The players stated that they would return if the coach stepped down. This did not happen.
When the Spanish Team won the World Cup, many fans online lauded the team itself, not the coach. In a famous clip online, players were seen celebrating together ignoring their head coach as they all exchanged hugs with one another after beating the Netherlands.

The sacking of Jorge Vilda only occurred due to Luis Rubiales’ actions. The manager was publicly given a contract extension by Rubiales in a press conference which was horribly timed as the person who non-consensually kissed a woman appreciated the work of a coach whose regime had many players quit. Now, with Jorge Vilda gone, Spain has introduced a new coach Montse Tome. The first Woman to ever coach the Spaniards.
