After lifting the 2023 Women’s World Cup last Sunday, Jenni Hermoso recreated Lionel Messi‘s celebration- ‘The Sleeping Beauty’. The Spanish star posted a picture in bed with the World Cup trophy. This was similar to the one posted by Leo Messi after achieving the same back in December. Social media did it’s thing as her post went viral while netizens also lauded the “unreal” influence of Messi.
The Spanish star played a crucial role in Spain’s World Cup run, bagging 3 goals while also providing 2 assists. Being the top scorer for the National team, she had the chance to add to her tally in the final. The referee awarded a penalty for a handball inside the box. However, Hermoso saw her penalty saved by England keeper Mary Earps. Her mistake remained unpunished, however, as Spain managed to hold on to their one-goal lead.
Hermoso was in tears following the final whistle and was seen tearing up while giving the post-match interview. Her celebrations went viral, both at the airport while wearing the medal when passing through the metal detector and also when she posted the picture while in bed with the trophy- like Lionel Messi did upon lifting his first World Cup in Qatar.
Spanish FA President kisses Jenni Hermoso on the lips during award ceremony
The Spanish celebrations were tainted by a moment of unwanted affection from the FA President. As the players lined up to receive their medals, Luis Rubiales was seen pecking Jenni Hermoso on the lips, following which the player made comments that she did not like that. Their incident has sparked controversy among players and fans alike, with netizens flaming the FA President for his actions, even calling for him to leave the position with hashtags #RubialesOut.
There is no official comment from Luis or the FA regarding the incident, while the player has given her comment to Spanish TV station LA 1. During the live broadcast, many fans went so far as to label it ‘harassment’. Albeit, the Spanish celebrations went long into the night.
