Erik ten Hag felt that Sunday’s defeat against Manchester City was a case of ‘fine margins’. Marcus Rashford gave the lead to the visitors in the eighth minute, before Phil Foden and Erling Haaland sealed the deal for the hosts. Manchester City ‘toyed’ with Ten Hag’s Reds in the second half and the statistics back up the claim. The post-match stats had United fans looking away as the enormity of Man City’s domination came to light.

United’s strikers had a bad day at the office, as their collective shots on target amounted to a meagre one attempt. City restricted the Red Devils to just one shot on target, that being Rashford’s screamer in the opening minutes. However, that was not the end of it, as fans noticed another ‘shameful’ tale of numbers. According to the stats, City took as many shots as United enjoyed possession for the entire game!

While Pep Guardiola‘s men took 27 shots at the United goal, the visitors’ share of possession was even less – 26 percent! The second half put daylight between the two sides, as Phil Foden launched City into the lead.

A fan claimed that United vs City cannot be labelled as a rivalry after this result. The evening for the Reds ended in Haaland getting his 18th goal of the season. The loss meant that United’s top four hopes took yet another blow as they are now eleven points from a European spot.

Surprisingly, Erling Haaland’s highlight of the Manchester Derby was not his late goal in added time. The Norwegian’s missed chance in the first half took all the headlines as Guardiola’s men won the game in spectacular fashion. While fans and pundits alike dragged the player for his miss, Guardiola was rather kind to his main man.

The great great players forget their missed chances in an instant. Players just smile and get on with it and Haaland did just that. He has an incredible ability to forget. That defines great players.
Pep Guardiola on Erling Haaland’s miss in a post-match interview

While one can’t be sure as to whether Haaland has forgotten about his miss or not, he certainly gave reason for fans to do so. His first and City’s third goal of the game was the dagger in the heart for Manchester United.

Guardiola also heaped praise on the man-of-the-match, Phil Foden. He said that Foden has been the best player in the league this season and that his work ethic and attitude is an added bonus to him helping the Cityzens win games. The City No.47 has now racked up 16 goals in all competitions this season, while also setting up another ten. City’s next game in the Premier League is against Liverpool, and a win would see them go two points clear of the current leaders.
