Steve Bruce, former manager of Newcastle, has revealed that he was asked to recommend a replacement for him in the managerial hot seat after his departure. The former Manchester United defender managed the Magpies for three years, helping them avoid relegation. When asked about his successor, he provided the board with two names. He also said that he himself told the club to sack him.
The first was current manager Eddie Howe who has proved to be massively successful for the club. The other was Steven Gerrard, whose career has taken a nosedive since then. Newcastle has recently come into the ownership of the Saudi PIF after Mike Ashley sold the club. They wanted a younger coach whose playing style could be more pleasant to the eye. Contrary to Steve Bruce’s style, whose critics complained about his hyper-defensive way of playing.
Eddie Howe has been largely successful due to this as he brought attacking football back to the club and led them to Champions League qualification in his very first season. Newcastle’s last appearance in the tournament was in the 2002/03 season. He has managed to please the owners, as well as the fans, and his signings have exceeded expectations.
Steven Gerrard, on the other hand, moved to Aston Villa in 2021 after a successful spell at Rangers. In Scotland, he went undefeated on the way to winning the title. Which earned him huge plaudits for that achievement. However, the success of that spell did not help Villa as he got sacked within a year and was replaced by Unai Emery. He has now joined Saudi club Al-Ettifaq as the head coach. Safe to say, Newcastle made the correct decision in appointing Howe.
