Upon returning to Paris, thousands of admirers welcomed the French national team. But Aurelien Tchouameni, Kingsley Coman, and Randal Kolo Muani were all the targets of vile racial abuse on social media following their heartbreaking loss to Argentina in the World Cup final. The match had ended in a 3-3 draw after extra time and was decided by a penalty shoot-out.

Coman and Tchouameni both failed to convert their penalties during the shootout. It reminds fans of the racially charged abuse England’s Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Bukayo Saka endured after the Euro 2020 final. All three French players have been bombarded with racist messages on social media featuring “monkey and banana” emojis. Tchouameni and Kolo Muani have refrained from commenting, while Coman‘s posts remain available for replies.

A representative of Meta, the corporation that administers Instagram, Facebook, and Whatsapp, declared to the Athletic that they have zero tolerance for racism on Instagram. Any comments that violate their rules have been taken down. They have also created new features such as Hidden Words and Limits to help protect their users from seeing this offensive content. Hidden Words filter out vulgar comments and Direct Messages, while Limits hide messages from people who haven’t followed or recently followed you.

France endured a heartbreaking defeat in the FIFA World Cup Final, but the brilliance of Kylian Mbappe gives the nation hope for the future

Kylian Mbappe

After a relatively uneventful World Cup ending with a surprise final, France’s players experienced a wild ride of emotions on Sunday against Argentina and Lionel Messi. Initially, they were down 2-0 in the first half. However, Kylian Mbappe‘s remarkable two-minute brace brought them back to even. Unfortunately, Messi managed to score in extra time, but Mbappe’s equalizing goal two minutes before the end of the game brought them back up. They ended in sadness and disappointment when Argentina won the penalty shootout.

Losing a World Cup final is always a challenging experience, particularly when it comes down to a penalty shootout. In the immediate aftermath of the loss, it is hard to focus on the positives; however, when the dust settles, Didier Deschamps and his team will likely reflect on why the first hour of play was so lackluster and why the latter half of the contest was much improved.

This was a new experience for France at the tournament, as they had usually been composed, effective, and successful in their matches until this point. It appears, however, that the weight of the concluding game, the presence of the renowned Messi, and the raucous backing of the Argentine fans caused the team to lose their composure and forget what had earned them success up until that point in Qatar.
