BBC issues an apology after the phrase ‘Manchester United are rubbish’ appeared on the ticker

In England, football is a serious business, so it’s not unexpected that a harmless blunder turned into a code red for the country’s leading broadcaster. It also doesn’t make the whole thing any less ridiculous.

The sentence appeared at the bottom of the BBC News ticker during a tennis report on the 9 am to 10 am show. Later that morning, presenter Annita McVeigh issued an apology to any Manchester United supporters who were hurt, explaining that the error happened because someone was learning how to use the ticker and was “writing weird stuff, not in seriousness.” On the ticker, there was also a statement that said “Weather rain everywhere.”

A BBC anchorperson issued a thorough apology a few minutes later, which contained not one, but two comments to those who may have been upset by the shot at the football club.

“Some of you may have seen something peculiar that runs along the bottom of the screen with headlines making a statement on Manchester United a bit earlier,” the newswoman stated. “I’m hoping that didn’t insult Manchester United supporters.”

She clarified by saying that someone was training behind the scenes to learn how to operate the ticker and put text on it, so they were just writing random stuff, not in earnest, and that remark appeared. She apologizes if it made the Manchester United fans upset. She said that was clearly a mistake, and it wasn’t supposed to show up on the screen.

United’s new manager, Erik ten Hag, has started his first week on the job. Despite the club’s record Premier League low of 58 points and sixth position after Sunday’s 1-0 loss at Crystal Palace, the Dutchman is optimistic he can turn things around.
