Today, the first El Clasico of the season has been played at Real Madrid‘s home stadium, Santiago Bernabeu with a faltering Barcelona on the verge of Champions League elimination.

After Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen stopped Vinicius Junior’s shot in the 12th minute, Real Madrid star Karim Benzema scored the first goal by converting a rebound. Their second goal, which was afterward blasted in by Fede Valverde, who was ultimately named the game’s player of the match, cemented their dominance.

Ferran Torres, who was on the receiving end of a cutback from Ansu Fati that Robert Lewandowski had left, gave Barca a last-second scare, nevertheless. In just over five minutes, they were able to mount a comeback, but Rodrygo’s penalty in the first minute of stoppage time gave the home team a 3-1 advantage.

Madrid now sit atop the Spanish league standings with a three-point advantage over Barca. Coming into the game, neither team had lost a league game, winning seven and drawing one.
