In a recent interview with Sky Sports, David Ginola heaped huge praise on Harry Kane, comparing him to the Argentine great, Diego Maradona. Calling him the “new playmaker at Spurs,” the former French football player claimed that the world is currently witnessing “the new Harry Kane” who has become a master of “long balls, shot balls, scoring, and assisting.”
“The new playmaker at Spurs is Harry Kane. I told you – Harry Kane, the playmaker, the number 10, he’s like Maradona now. He’s playing in the middle of the park, long balls, short balls, scoring, assisting, wow. This is the new Harry Kane,” said Ginola.
Tottenham Hotspurs came from a goal behind to secure a 5-1 victory over Newcastle United in North London on Sunday. Following the win, Spurs moved up to fourth in the Premier League table on goal difference and piled the pressure on rivals Arsenal – who have two games in hand over their north London rivals.
Ginola watched his former sides in action and saw Kane put in another stunning performance as he set-up up Tottenham’s go-ahead goal from Matt Doherty and thus, drew a parallel between him and Maradona.

Spurs legend Clive Allen, who once played alongside Maradona, believes Ginola’s claims were “a little bit bold.” However, he too praised Kane following the rampant win.
“I had the pleasure of seeing David [Ginola] yesterday before the game, he looked fantastic. I think those comments were a little bit bold, I have to say. I played with Diego Maradona many years ago in Ossie Ardiles’ testimonial, and he was the best player in the world at the time, he was the best player I have played with,” stated Allen.
“Harry Kane is up there in terms of being the best center-forward in the world at the moment, and when he does drop into those deeper positions, I think it is one of his exceptional talents. It is not just his goalscoring, but range of pass, and Heung-Min Son and the whole team are benefitting from that, and his excellent vision is also something he is demonstrating at the moment,” added the former English football player.
Harry Kane’s numbers in the 2021-22 season so far
Harry Kane currently has 12 goals this season, which is average for a player of his stature, but we’ll see what happens later as we go into the business end of the season.
Back in 2017, Kane had the chance to meet the 1986 World Cup winner before Spurs’ 4-1 victory against Liverpool.
