Liverpool emerged victorious at the Anfield after they defeated a Cristiano Ronaldo-less Manchester United 4-0 to go top of the table. Interestingly, Liverpool scored nine goals in two meetings against Manchester United this season after they thrashed the Red Devils 5-0 at the Old Trafford.

With this win, Liverpool stays in the race to win the title after they take a two-point lead with one game more than Manchester City. Manchester United’s hope of qualifying for the Champions League next season looks dull after a shameful loss at Anfield.

Here are some Twitter reactions after a disastrous performance from Manchester United, who lags behind heavily in the top four race:

A user wrote, “The performance of the Man United can be judged from the fact that Harry Maguire is the second-best player on the pitch.”

Harry Macguire had a forgetful match as he failed miserably at the defense and to play a captain’s role. His positions in the field and man-marking were terrible which led Ralf Rangnick’s side to stand in the game. Liverpool strikers got the better of Manchester United’s poor defensive line several times allowing them to take 14 shots.

Liverpool was in a mood to bring storm over the United’s defense as they took a total of 14 shots to United’s just 2 shots. They dominated the game with a ball possession of 74% and created 17 chances. David De Gea was kept busy but had to swallow a wave of attacks with four of them going past him.

Liverpool opened their scoring in the first half after Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah both scored each in the first half. Manchester United couldn’t stand the pressure from the Liverpool attackers. In the second half, Manchester United started playing some attacking football but shortly, Sadio Mane increased the lead for the hosts, followed by Salah scoring his second for the night and Liverpool’s fourth.

Liverpool goes to the top of the table ahead of their arch-rival Manchester City with 6 games to play for. Manchester City has a one-match advantage to regain their lead as they face Brighton on Wednesday. Manchester United remains at the sixth position with 54 points but has only 5 games in hand which look very difficult for them to be in the race as they face Arsenal next matchday.
