Gary Neville has paid tribute to migrant workers who have passed away as a direct result of the World Cup and urged governing organizations to examine the tournament’s planning. Neville has regularly discussed the horrible events that have resulted in more than 6,500 migrant labourers dying while working on new stadiums for Qatar 2022, only adding fuel to the flames of the numerous scandals that have surrounded a tournament that has been viewed with complete contempt.
The former Manchester United great has embraced the concept of a global tournament that has editions in Africa and Far East Asia for the first time this century. This World Cup is the first to ever be staged in the Arab world.
But when the tournament’s first game drew near, Neville went on live television to criticize the conduct of the wealthy. Neville discussed the ongoing controversies in an interview with beIN Sports prior to the tournament’s opening match between the host & Ecuador.
What Gary Neville had to say about Qatar, the 2022 FIFA World Cup host nation?
Gary Neville said: “Depending what part of the world you’re in! In England, you aren’t quite going to think the same over here as you do in Qatar. I think that’s the reality of it the workers who built these stadiums do need thanking and honouring in the right way – but the football is here. it’s the greatest sports tournament in the world.”
“There should be a World Cup in an Arab country, there should be a World Cup in a Muslim country, there should be a World Cup in the Middle East that is a fact! But we also need to challenge and scrutinise the things that go on in every country including ours and Qatar,” he added.
