“They have to be better” – Frank Lampard warns of another relegation battle for Everton after Toffees suffer an embarrassing 4-0 defeat to MLS club in pre-season
Frank Lampard
Everton continued their disappointing start to the pre-season as Frank Lampard’s men succumbed to a humiliating 4-0 defeat to MLS Side, Minnesota United. The Toffees earlier lost their opening preseason game 2-0 to Arsenal.
Everton boasts one of the biggest records in Premier League history. The club have only ever been relegated from England’s top-flight football twice. Moreover, the club only ever finished outside of the top 10, twice in the last 12 seasons.
However, last season, Everton barely managed to remain in the Premier League as they finished 16th in the table, 4 points clear of relegation. Many thought that the new season under Frank Lampard would mean a new and improved Everton, but so far, the club has only gone from bad to worse.
Frank Lampard warns Everton could face another relegation battle this season
It seems that the worse days aren’t over for the Merseyside club as they continued their poor form last season into the pre-season. The club have already lost their first 2 games to Arsenal and Minnesota United. Moreover, they are yet to score in the preseason so far.
Speaking to Everton TV after the game, Lampard said, “The players have to work and understand we were in a relegation battle for a big portion of last season.”
“We had an amazing night [against Crystal Palace ] and an amazing run but, as soon as that finished, I put it to bed very quickly, so the players have to put it to bed as well because we were in that fight for a reason.”
“And if we don’t want to be in that situation again, they have to better and I have to be better. As a club, it [the Minnesota game] reinforced the situation in terms of what we need to do with the squad, because it has to be stronger that what we saw tonight.”
The Toffees haven’t enjoyed the best transfer window so far. They have only signed Burnley’s James Tarkowski on a free transfer while lost Richarlison to Tottenham Hotspurs. Lampard will hope he can get some new reinforcements to improve this Everton side.
