Real Madrid have been plagued with injuries ever since the start of the 2023/24 season. A player that Madristas have missed dearly, and has seen his recovery set back yet again is Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian goalkeeper suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury at the start of the campaign and has missed over six months of action for the Los Blancos!
After reports suggested that the Belgian was well on course to make a return, both players and fans were shocked to understand his comeback was pushed back yet again! On Tuesday, the player suffered yet another injury, this time on his right knee during training. According to a statement released by the club, tests revealed that he suffered a meniscus tear.
While Andriy Lunin has been nothing short of spectacular for the Los Blancos, a faction of supporters said that Courtois will be dearly missed if they are to go deep into the Champions League.
His performance in the final of the 2022 Champions League vs Liverpool remains one of the best ever in the competition. As of now, Real are top of the table in La Liga and take on Manchester City later in April in the UCL.
Fans react to Thibaut Courtois’ unfortunate injury
Real Madrid fans were excited at the prospect of Thibaut Courtois making a comeback for the final weeks of the season. After being sidelined since August, the likes of Kepa Arrizabalaga and Andriy Lunin had been filling in for the shot stopper. The news on Thursday came to the dismay of several fans as one commented that he was cursed. Another fan slyly pointed out that Kevin De Bruyne was secretly praying for his downfall.
It is no secret that the two share a strained relationship at Belgium. Others made no effort to conceal their dismay at his injury. Some Chelsea fans hadn’t forgotten the circumstances in which he left the club and wished that he didn’t recover anytime soon. Rival fans took digs at Real medical staff and said that his relapse was only because they tried to rush him out by injecting drugs.
Some fans jokingly commented that they couldn’t bear witness to any more games with Kepa in goal. The Spaniard was mercilessly trolled on previous occasions for errors made against Atletico Madrid and others. Some confident Real Madrid fans spammed pictures of Andriy Lunin and said that they were in safe hands until his return. With some even calling for his retirement, the footballing community eagerly awaits the return of Thibaut Courtois.
