“Thibaut Courtois, that’s it, that’s the tweet”- Twitter reacts as Courtois singlehandedly rescues Real Madrid to their 14th Champions League glory
What. A. Player. What a performance? Thibaut Courtois singlehandedly won Real Madrid the Champions League with a wonderful performance that won the hearts of everyone watching the match. Here is what Twitter has to say about his superhuman performance.
Twitter showers praise on Superman Thibaut Courtois
After a considerable delay to kick-off due to the problems outside the stadium, Jurgen Klopp’s side dominated the early stages of the match with six attempts on goal during the opening 22 minutes, forcing Courtois to make two top saves from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in the process.
The brilliant Courtois pulled off another couple of important saves for Madrid as Liverpool threatened to respond immediately. The Belgium international was arguably the standout player on the pitch and it may have been a very different story if Real Madrid had another ‘keeper in goal.
He said on BT Sport: “In the press conference yesterday I said when Real Madrid plays finals they win it. I’m on the good side of history.
“I saw tweets coming my way saying I was going to get humbled today but it was the other way around. Today I needed to win a final for my career, for all the hard work, to put respect on my name, because I don’t think I have enough respect, especially in England. I saw a lot of criticism, even after a great season, that I was not good enough or whatever.
“I’m just really happy and proud of the performance of the team. We stuck to it and when I needed to be I was there for the team.”
Liverpool couldn’t find a way past Courtois, who cemented his status as a Real Madrid legend on a night that the club won their 14th European Cup. Courtois made nine saves – most in a Champions League final – to hold on to a clean sheet to give Madrid a 1-0 win.
