Liverpool and PSV Eindhoven recently announced the transfer news of Cody Gakpo on Boxing Day. The 23-year-old is set to join the Reds and will officially become a Liverpool player once his work permit is granted. Numerous clubs, such as Manchester United, were interested in the Dutch international, but Cody chose Anfield as his new home. After signing the contract, Gakpo revealed the role of Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk’s role in convincing him to join the Premier League giants.
On the official Liverpool website, Cody Gakpo revealed how the Dutch defender convinced him to join the club and how it can help him become a better footballer. “We spoke a lot over the phone [in] the last days. What he told me was that this is the right move for me to make and for me to develop and to become a better player, that the club is a really big and massive club but also like a real family – I think that’s also very important for me because I’m a family guy. He said only good things,”.
As per reports, Cody Gakpo was on Manchester United’s priority list, but Liverpool was on the money for him. He has signed a deal until 2028 and is set to dawn the number 18 jersey for the Reds. Club icons like Dirk Kuyt and Michael Owen wore the same number. Indeed, Cody has big shoes to fill in, but his potential can see him exceeding his expectations.
Jurgen Klopp hugs and expresses excitement for new signing Gakpo
The fans adored Jurgen Klopp and CoGakdo’s clip of hugging each other. Interestingly, Klopp had some kind words for his new signing. The German expressed he likes how ‘smart’ a footballer Cody Gakpo is.
“There is a lot to like about Cody. He is still only 23 years old but he already has a lot of experience. Offensively, he is very versatile and on top of this we know he is a smart footballer. He is also a smart person, so we are really excited to be able to work with him,” said Klopp on Cody.
If everything stays on track (paperwork), Liverpool fans could see their new boy playing in the Premier League in their upcoming fixture against Brentford on Monday. Liverpool can use some firepower upfront in the attack. Since Sadio Mane’s departure, the Reds have not created the fear they used to do in the opposition’s mindset.
