There was a time when the then Real Madrid manager, Jose Mourinho, asked for nothing but patience from the Real Madrid fans and supporters as he was moulding his 2012 signing from Tottenham Hotspurs, Luka Modric, into a Maestro.
His words hold true now as, after a decade of brilliance, the Croatian still is at the top of his game, winning the Man of the Match against Chelsea in the Champion league 2021-22 on Wednesday.
“All I ask from the Madridistas is to give Luka Modric some time and be patient. He is so good that the Santiago Bernabéu will fall in love with his class,” said Jose Mourinho in an earlier post-match press conference.
Modric has come a long way from being the worst La Liga signing of 2012 to becoming a legend for the Los Blancos, winning an incredible four Champions League winners medals – three of which were in succession, two LaLiga titles, three UEFA Super Cups, three Club World Cups, one Copa del Rey and four Spanish Super Cups.
If this was not impressive, then Luka Modric’s performance on the international stage was completely another show, leading Croatia’s golden generation to their first FIFA finals in 2018 but lost after a rather convincing performance putting a fair 4-2 scoreline against France.
Modric’s individual finesse also caught the eye winning the Golden Ball at the same world cup ahead of all other superstars. His World Cup masterclass also earned him a Ballon d’Or that year becoming the first player in 10 years other than Messi or Ronaldo to win the laurel.
Luka Modric: A leader for Real Madrid
Ten years from that moment in 2012, Luka Modric has now become a leader in the Real Madrid locker room, co-captain to teammate Marcelo. The 36-year-old Croatian has now become a ‘veteran’ on and off the pitch for Los Blancos, inspiring young teammates like Federico Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga.
The midfielder also has put on indomitable performances himself in important matches leading to comebacks, very recent example being the Champions League match against Chelsea with Modric’s assists leading to winning goals in both the legs as Real Madrid find themselves in the semi-finals of the competition.
