WATCH: When Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard’s unfortunate slip helped Manchester City clinch the Premier League title eight years ago

On this day eight years ago, Liverpool star Steven Gerrard had a fall that helped Demba Ba of Chelsea to snatch a goal and gave Chelsea and lead against Liverpool in a Premier League game. Gerrard was standing at the center-back position and a grounded pass from Mamadou Sakho towards him was easy to gather but meanwhile he ‘slipped’ that led Demba Ba to score, which ultimately, led Manchester City to clinch the Premier League title instead of the Reds.

Liverpool was about to win the premier league title in the 2013/14 season if they had beaten Chelsea in the tie at Anfield. They were on the top of the table but a blunder from their skipper, Gerrard, in the defensive half helped Demba Ba to run through and score.

Chelsea didn’t have their ‘full-powered’ squad because they were in the race for the Champions League title. Jose Mourinho had rested some players and played the second-string team against Brendon Rodger’s side. Fans and experts predicted the Merseyside would win easily but they lost the game 2-0 with goals from Ba and Willian.

In the next game, Liverpool drew against Crystal palace 3-3 which probably handed over the cup to Manchester City as they lost 5 points in two games in the race for the title. Steven Gerrard captained the side but gifted an all-important goal to Demba Ba of Chelsea who finish calmly to take the lead. This led to Manchester City’s winning the 2013/14 Premier League title.

Many questions about Chelsea striker Demba Ba’s sympathy towards that “slip” from Gerrard arose, leading to many answers and consequences but definitely, it didn’t hurt Ba much as it was all but professional.

What did the former Chelsea striker, Demba Ba, say about Steven Gerrard and the Liverpool game?

Demba Ba was one of the stars in Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea squad who destroyed a bit of Liverpool’s dream of winning the Premier League title in the 2013/14 season. He said that it was a part of the game and nothing meant to him if Liverpool won the league or Manchester City. According to him, nobody showed mercy or sympathy on the field and that’s very visible.

“I didn’t feel sorry for him. I’m not a Steven Gerrard supporter. I’m not a Liverpool supporter. I’m not a Man City supporter or happy that they won the league”, said Demba Ba on ending Liverpool’s dream.

As of now, Liverpool is on the verge of winning the quadruple this season, having already won the Carabao Cup 2021-22. They will next face Villarreal in the semi0finals of the Champions League 2021-22.
