Timo Werner signed for Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window of 2023. He had returned to London after two years, leaving RB Leipzig. He had earlier played for Chelsea, but couldn’t live up to the price tag. Now on loan at Spurs, he had to prove that he could still perform in the Premier League.
Signing on loan, he made his Tottenham debut on 14th January against Manchester United. Although the game ended with a 2-2 draw, Werner provided an assist that ensured the Lilywhites left Old Trafford with a point.
Rasmus Hojlund, who has been under fire for his inability to finish, scored in the 3rd minute. Richarlison scored his 6th goal in 6 games just 15 minutes later. He scored it with a header from a corner taken by Pedro Porro.
Marcus Rashford equalized five minutes before the end of the first half after a fantastic finish. Rodrigo Bentancur finally scored the last goal of the match right at the start of the 2nd half. A cross by Werner ensured Spurs could find the equalizer at Old Trafford.
Timo Werner’s fantastic debut
Timo Werner played 80 minutes in his first appearance for Spurs. Although the forward struggled with his shooting, only having one shot on target, he was instrumental in how Ange Postecoglou’s men attacked. He had a 91% pass accuracy and created an important chance for Bentancur.
Many fans praised him on X for his great performance. So many fans were excited about his successful debut, hoping they could see more performances like those. Although fans were happy with him, they were concerned about his finishing skills. During his time at Chelsea, he had struggled immensely with finding the back of the net, but Spurs fans were ready to give time.
Check out some of the fans’ reactions:
Werner’s assist ensured both sides ended the match with a single point. Spurs will not play Manchester City in the 4th round of the FA Cup on 27th January, while United’s opponents haven’t been decided yet.
Tottenham who were in the title race are now 5th thanks to a string of poor form. They are tied on points with rivals Arsenal, who have played a game extra. United meanwhile jumped to 7th, but risk going down to 8th if Brighton win their game in hand.
