Todd Boehly calls Chelsea squad ’embarrassing’ in dressing room talks ahead of UCL tie against Real Madrid

Owner Todd Boehly reportedly criticized the entire Chelsea squad after the club lost 2-1 to Brighton Hove Albion. Goals from Danny Welbeck and Julio Enciso cancelled out Conor Gallagher’s opener as the Blues slumped to their 12th defeat in the Premier League this season.

Boehly was joined by his fellow board members as he addressed the players in the dressing room post the defeat. The American labelled the club’s performance as ’embarrassing’ and said that the club hierarchy is unhappy and expects better things after signing €600 million worth of players this season.

Chelsea have had a horrid season as they currently sit 11th on the Premier League table. They were also knocked out of the domestic competitions at the hands of Manchester City. They are in a messy situation in the Champions League as well as they lost 2-0 to Real Madrid in the first leg of the quarterfinals.

Todd Boehly’s criticism left multiple heads in the dressing room baffled. However, goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and manager Frank Lampard interpreted it in a positive manner.

Arrizabalaga stated, “Todd comes to the changing room in every game. He had different chats with us after different games. I am not going to say what he said. It is normal when he came.”

Lampard stated: “There may have been some criticism of our old owner for not coming to games, not being around, and that wasn’t always true to be fair. But when an owner is invested in their interest in the team and wants to help and improve, it’s their prerogative to have the input they want. I remember the moments as a player of owners first coming into the dressing room.”

Boehly took over as owner from Roman Abramovic at the start of the season. Chelsea have since had four different managers on the pitch. The American would hope to turn things around next season.
