Lothar Matthäus claims Bayern Munich were blackmailed into spending £100m for Harry Kane. The 30-year-old striker who has been at the London club- Tottenham Hotspur- since the youth levels has finally left the club for the German giants.

It was public news that Harry Kane’s contract would come to an end in 2024. With only one year left, many clubs would have pounced on the striker to get him on a free. However, Bayern’s senior members were so sure of the player’s ability that they instead chose to take the bait, paying £100m for the English striker. While there are no doubts about his ability, Matthäus feels hard done by Tottenham. Further, he claims Bayern were ‘blackmailed’ into paying the huge amount.

Bayern sorely missed a striker last season. Robert Lewandowski flew to Spain and the Bavarians lost a crucial member of their team. Also with his age, Bayern needed a reliable striker in the long run. Harry Kane was the ideal replacement. Everyone knows of Englishman’s ability to score. But his ability to link up play, hold up play and his passing range are not spoken of enough compared to his scoring.

Harry Kane scored 30 goals in his final season scoring 43% of Spur’s goals in the 2022-23 Premier League season. The Lillywhites ended their season in 8th place behind Aston Villa who claimed the last European spot in the Conference League.

Now, the Londoners have lost a major goalscoring threat in Kane. A disappointing ’22/23 by Heung-min Son‘s standards, a dreadful season by Richarlison, and low numbers by Dejan Kulusevski means that Ange Postecoglou might look to the market to find his next goal threat.

But for now, 4 goals in 2 games in the new season seems really good. The fans are hopeful again but with a doubt. Is this going to be enough in the long run? Well, the Tottenham board have a week left before the summer window closes, it is a now-or-never situation.
